Eviction and Foreclosure Avoidance

~Introduction

If any families you serve face potential foreclosure for non-payment of mortgage or eviction for non-payment of rent, work with them and their bishop and consult the other resources provided on the Housing page of Mission Resources, to assist in avoiding such actions.  Foreclosures and evictions will only multiply the problems they face and they should work with you and the Bishop to see if there are ways of assisting them.   In addition, missionaries can be excellent mentors in helping people learn to be better tenants and homeowners.

State Department of Workforce Services

The State Department of Workforce Services offers a once in a twelve month period emergency assistance for eligible households. Emergency Assistance provides immediate help for short periods for families who don't have enough money to prevent becoming homeless or having their utilities shut off due to a crisis beyond the control of the family. The purpose is to keep families from losing their homes or to help families find new homes.

Services provided by Workforce Services include:

  • Payments for rent, security deposits, mortgage, and utilities.
  • Referrals to legal services to avoid losing one's house or apartment.
  • People who can act as go-betweens to help resolve problems with landlords and mortgage companies.

As of 2025, payments provided will not be more than:

  • $450 per family for one month's rent.
  • $700 per family for one month's mortgage payment.
  • $300 per family for paying utilities.
