Family Literacy Progam - Weber State University
Weber State University offers a Family Literacy Program in Ogden.
Their Goal: To help families to increase learning and engagement with their children. Services are offered in both English and Spanish.
They focus on empowering parents from less privileged backgrounds to engage in learning activities with their young children such as dialogic reading, phonetic awareness, learning throughout the day, parent and child time together, language development, and fostering emergent literacy skills in early childhood. They seek to accomplish these goals by working directly with families to enhance parenting skills and healthy family interactions. They offer free visits in the home every 3 to 4 weeks where they promote literacy, give parents the tools they need to help their children succeed, and teach parenting tips as well.
What They Teach:
- Literacy Skills- teach parents to engage in dialogic reading, phonics, & PACT Time (parent and child together time)
- Community Connections- Encourage families to attend libraries, the Treehouse Museum, & community events
- Healthy Family Interactions- Teach parenting tips and strategies, routines, & involvement
- Healthy Limit Setting= Strategies to reduce media use & punitive parenting practices
