Dental Assistance

Dental needs are often postponable and are likely to be neglected by those pressured by other necessities. Therefore, Wasatch Front Service Mission missionaries are frequently faced with the challenge of helping their assigned households find dental care for which they have neither insurance nor ready cash. Yet participation in work or school, as well as just living without pain, can often be made difficult or impossible without reasonable access to dental services. Our dental specialists, offer the following advice:  Self-reliance in dental health starts with preventing the problems. When opportune, advise your assigned families as to basic prevention.

In Utah, Dental care is a covered service for eligible Medicaid members who are pregnant, disabled, blind, age 65 or older, and children ages birth through 20 who qualify for Medicaid and certain others.  Medicaid members enrolled in the emergency services program for non-citizens are not eligible for dental benefits, except for emergency dental services. April 1, 2025 Medicaid Dental Expansion to Cover all Adult Medicaid Members 

Effective April 1, 2025, Utah’s Medicaid program has been expanded to provide dental benefits to all adult Medicaid members aged 21 and over, who are currently excluded from receiving dental benefits.  These adult members eligible for dental services will be required to receive services though the University of Utah School of Dentistry or its associated statewide provider network.

Finding and Utilizing Resources for Dental Needs

Dental needs are met through both community resources and Wasatch Front Service Mission Resources Specialists Services.

1.    Community Dental Resources

2. Mission Resources Dental Services

Dentists throughout Salt Lake Valley have committed to provide limited dental care at minimal cost to Wasatch Front Service Mission patients who lack dental insurance/Medicaid and/or the ability to pay for such services.

A letter has been sent to all dentists in the Salt Lake Valley asking them to volunteer to assist in the Wasatch Front Service Mission. Many, but not all, responded. The dentists have agreed to see two or three patients a year and give a generous financial consideration. If a fee is charged, it will vary according to the work involved. The dentists are doing a great service. If you as missionaries have dental friends, you might ask them if they would see a couple of patients a year. If so, inform Dr. Borg or Dr. Rosander and they will give you a big THANKS.

How to Schedule a Dental Appointment Using the Storehouse Dental Specialists

• Seek assistance from the Storehouse of Specialists for dental services only with the bishop’s approval.
• Make sure the bishop or branch president is aware that if a fee is charged, he may end up being responsible for the expense.
• Before calling the specialist, read the instructions and the Rules for Using the Storehouse.
• Contact the patient and get a general idea of the dental problem.
• Call the applicable Dental Specialist for that day
• The specialist will give you the name and information of the next dentist on the list.
• Call that dentist, introduce yourself as an Wasatch Front Service Mission missionary and ask for an appointment. You must then take the patient to the dental appointment. This is important.
• If possible, have the dental problem taken care of at that appointment.
• If a return appointment is needed, ask for a written treatment plan, including treatment cost.  Be sure to ask about alternative ways to solve the problem. Present this estimated cost to the bishop.  Obtain the bishop’s approval before scheduling another appointment.
• If you or the bishop question the cost for treatment, you can call Dr. Rosander or Dr. Borg and ask their opinion.
• Give the patient the opportunity to make all decisions regarding his/her treatment and to make a partial payment if able.
• This appointment is limited to one patient, not the family.

Guidelines for the Wasatch Front Service Mission Dental Program

• This program is for limited dental treatment.
• The goal is to provide dental care necessary to relieve pain and for the recipient to become gainfully employed and self-reliant.
• There is no prior commitment for the dentist regarding a fee that will be charged, if any. The dentist was asked to be generous.
• If lab work is necessary, there will probably be a charge. The dentist may be willing to volunteer his time, but not a lab expense.
• Write a thank-you letter to the dentist and encourage the recipient to do the same, expressing appreciation for the charitable service.

211 (United Way of Salt Lake)

211 is an easy-to-remember, three-digit number that connects people to the services they need, such as housing and utility assistance, food resources, legal aid and more.  You can access it online or by dialing 211 during office hours and describing the type of problem and service you are seeking. If you don’t find an answer elsewhere, it is possible that 211 may help.

Community Health Centers Dental Clinics

CHC offers a schedule of sliding fees to patients with incomes below 200 % of the Federal Poverty Level (check website for acceptable forms of proof of income).  Your bill will always be at least $55 for a dental visit. See website for detailed payment information. Insured and uninsured are both expected to pay appropriate co-pays at time of service.

Donated Dental Services

Salt Lake Donated Dental Services provides quality, comprehensive dental care to low-income and homeless individuals at our two locations:

Our dental professionals provide patients with treatment options comparable to what they would expect from a private office. SLDDS treats all patients regardless of ability to pay. Donated and discounted services are available depending upon family size and income. Printed proof of income eligibility such as most recent pay stubs or Social Security statement is required prior to scheduling.

Midtown Community Health Center

Midtown Community Health Center’s goal has been to ensure that all community residents have access to quality, affordable healthcare with a focus on providing care to underserved populations. We want to ensure that all community residents have access to healthcare — especially those with lower incomes, without health insurance, who speak languages other than English, and individuals who face barriers to receiving care in a traditional healthcare setting.

Roseman Dental

Roseman Dental, the clinical practice of Roseman University College of Dental Medicine, is an affordable option, offering care provided by dental students and resident dentists.  All care is supervised by faculty members who are licensed dentists. 

Please note that while dental care is typically lower than what you would find at a traditional dental office, they are not able to provide it free of charge.  Roseman Dental is located at 10894 S. River Front Parkway, South Jordan.

Salt Lake Donated Dental Service

There are two dental programs available:

• Donated Dental (free for those with an income at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level which is currently $27,750 for a family of 4).
• Discount Dental (significantly reduced fee for those with an income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level which is currently $55,500 for a family of 4).

Senior Charity Care

Our mobile dentist travels the Wasatch Front bringing quality, affordable dental care to seniors in Utah. We offer a wide range of services, from dentures, to fillings, to cleanings.   ​ 

If your teeth ache, you need to see a dental hygienist, or you need a tooth crown, we can help!  ​ 

Prices depend on your annual income, and will be shared with you prior to your appointment. We are a Medicaid dental provider.

They offer routine cleanings and extractions to partial and full dentures.    This service is for those 55+ and those living at or below 200% Federal Poverty Level.

You can explain your situation, what you're looking for, and they can get you connected to the right clinics or associated providers in your area.

We offer a full range of dental services for patients of all ages, including adults, children, teens, and the elderly. To better serve you and your whole family, we have multiple locations across the state of Utah.

If you don't have dental insurance or are paying out-of-pocket, you can get dental care at a discounted fee from our dental students and residents who are supervised by licensed dentists.

We also care for patients with special needs like autism and developmental disabilities.
